Pastor Bob began his life’s work as a sports writer and newspaper editor. 12 years later his sister’s prayers were answered when he turned to God at a Cursillo (forerunner to the Emmaus Walk) and thereafter went to seminary. After graduation from McCormick Seminary he served 3 Presbyterian churches during a 25-year span. Worship attendance doubled at those churches under his guidance and in one, a nearly 30 year downward spiral in attendance was reversed.
Known for his contagious smile and friendliness, Pastor Bob is always interested in hearing other people’s life stories and history. He has been employed as an on-call chaplain and understands the stresses of tough times.
Pastor Bob’s responsibilities as assistant pastor includes: 1) congregational care 2) providing oversight for the 11 a.m. traditional worship service, 3) providing oversight discipleship and mission and 4) assisting the Senior Pastor as needed.
Pastor Bob is married to Wendy, who is director of Children’s Ministries at Wesley Memorial United Methodist church in Tampa. They have 4 children: Scott of Naples, FL., Ben of Big Lake, MN., Cindy of Denver, CO., and Molly of Chicago, IL. They also have 7 grandchildren with number 8, Sophie, due soon.
Pastor Bob was born and raised in Iowa and is a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan. However, he’s willing to learn to cheer for the South Florida Bulls.

Bob has served on the staff of United Methodist Churches in St. Petersburg,
Ft. Lauderdale, Lakeland and Tampa for the past 30 years. Sometimes referred
to as “Mr. Methodist” he has done almost every job in the church except playing
the organ…but that is his favorite music to hear!
He graduated with a degree in Education
(English and journalism) and taught in a
public high school for 4 years. He has
worked in full time Christian ministry ever
since. His years were spent in Youth
Ministry, as well as Church Administration,
and as a full time Missions and Outreach
Director. He is active in United Methodist
District and Conference Ministries and is
a member of several Boards.
Bob’s main passion is helping others through the love of Christ and His church.
He spent summers (while in college and teaching) directing centers for the
Appalachia Service Project, has worked in many local outreach ministries, and
worked with AIDS orphans and vulnerable children in South Africa. He believes
every person is called by God to help be the “hands and feet of Jesus” and he will
help each member find his/her place to serve.

Pastor David Smith comes to Temple Terrace United Methodist Church after serving in youth ministry for 15 years throughout the Florida Conference. Before entering ministry, he designed and managed golf courses; after God called him to ministry, David acquired his BA in Church Ministry and then followed it with an MDiv in Church Ministry.
In 2001, David married Jennifer – who’s way out of his league – and in 2006, they were blessed with a vibrant, little boy named Josiah Michael. The Smiths live in Temple Terrace, and Jennifer serves as the executive director for Crosswinds Wesley Foundation on the campus of the University of South Florida.
David limits his life to four specific passions:
- Sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ to those who do not know Him yet.
- Spending time with Jennifer and Josiah.
- Great barbecue.
- Playing golf (and apologizing to homeowners for errant shots).

Gil Sterling’s passion is to help support those whom God calls to bring His word, whether it is through music, drama or preaching. Through training, scheduling volunteers and maintaining the lights, projectors and sound systems, he works at keeping the technical side of our services flowing to prevent distractions from worship.
Gil has run sound for several local music groups, ranging from southern gospel and jazz quartets, to rock bands and musicals like "Brigadoon" and "The Sound of Music." He also sang bass with the gospel quartet Cornerstone for 10 years. When not in the tech booth, he is on stage with the band playing guitar or bass. His motto: “I go where I’m needed, and I do what has to be done.”
