News Flash: New Classes Starting Sept. 12!

11a.m. Sunday School Class Offerings
Enjoy church at 9:30 a.m., then go deeper in fellowship and the study of His Word at 11o' clock

Co-Ed class: FaithWeaver
Teacher/Facilitator: Missy Watson
Who: Couples, Singles, w/ kids, w/o kids, all
When: 11 - Noon, Sept. 12-Nov. 21 (11 weeks)
*Commitment: Can enter at anytime, however, best to commit to all sessions.
Where: Building 300, room 34
What: Ever wonder about the church calendar, Advent, Communion, Lent, etc.? Ever wondered how to apply GOD’s word to everyday situations in your life? Now you can learn firsthand. This fall we will be diving into the study of the king’s in the Bible. We will learn to break down a lesson in a tangible way, which will then equip you to have open dialogue with your children, co-workers and friends. This will be a time of fellowship, learning Biblical truth and equipping you and your family to grow closer in faith to Christ. Lots of discussion.

Co-Ed class: The Book of James
Teacher/Facilitator: Pastor David Smith
Who: Men and Women
When: 11-noon, Sept. 12-Nov. 21 (11 weeks)
*Commitment: all 11 weeks. Each week builds on the last.
Where: Building 300 TBA (either room 33 or Fellowship hall)
What: The Book of James is one of the most hated books in the Bible, for many reasons. In several places the author seems quite tactless, even angry. He comes across as "telling it like it is" no matter what you and I might think. This James - whoever he is - also seems to disagree with the rest of the entire Bible when it comes to the source of salvation. Are people saved by faith in Christ, or by doing good deeds? That's a big deal!
No wonder Martin Luther wanted this book removed from the Bible.
But if we throw the baby out with the bathwater, we lose a very important message from God. The Book of James is crammed with tremendous insights on many important matters of faith. Everything from warnings to wisdom is included.
 .
Co-Ed class: The book of John
Teacher/Facilitator: Joyce & Tracy Johnston
Who: Men and Women 18 and up
When: 11:00-Noon, ongoing
*Commitment: Enter at anytime.
Where: Building 300, Room 36
What: Together our class is taking a journey through the New Testament in a round table fashion. We are reading each book of the Bible in the order it was originally written. Besides scripture and our personal insight, we add historical and archeological information to the discussion.

Women’s class: Seeking HIM
Teacher/Facilitator: Michele Stocker
Who: Women all ages
When: 11:00am-Noon; September 1st-November 21st (11Weeks)
*Commitment: All 11 weeks. Each week builds on the last. Daily homework of about 20min.
Where: Building 300, room 37
What: Seeking Him bible study by Nancy Leigh DeMoss and Tim Grissom
Few of us experience the joy of personal revival. Our time spent with God is short and hurried, and we miss out on the intimacy He desires. To change this, we need to seek the Lord for contagious revival that begins in us and spreads to others. Topics will include Revival, Humility, Repentance, Honesty, Holiness, Obedience, clear Conscience, Forgiveness, Sexual immorality, and Grace.
Daily study in the Bible; Workbook $12.00
***Commitment to all is encouraged but certainly anyone can drop in at anytime.

Michele Stocker joins the staff

Michele Stocker comes to Temple Terrace United Methodist Church with a calling to reach the whole family through Discipleship and with a deep passion for women. “God has taught me over the years that women, not matter the family dynamics, are the heart of the home and when that heart is captured by Christ it is contagious to all. Secondly, women have been given the gift of influence and it is my desire for that influence to be a godly one.”

Michele has an education degree specializing in Early Childhood and Children with special needs. Married to her high school sweetheart, Chris for 20 years, she is the blessed parents of three children, Tanner, Ashton and Kennedy.

Stephen Ministry update

As part of an awareness building effort, our fifth Sunday was allocated to uplifting our church’s Stephen Ministry. As such, our Stephen Ministry team participated in both services, shared a pictorial presentation of the 2010 Stephen Ministry journey at TTUMC, as well as held an information awareness opportunity in our Fellowship Hall.

Mike Cummings and Margie Fox starred in a TTUMC original drama last Sunday that depicted how struggles can arise in a marriage. It was written by Joe Henderson, whom we are so grateful for his great work and his ability to coach our team into good actors. Much love to you from the Stephen Ministry team, Joe!

Pictured below are Margie and Mike in the narthex after their performance.

In the Fellowship Hall, Stephen Leaders and Stephen Ministers shared handouts and answered questions about the ministry.

Stephen Ministry is grounded in Jesus’ command to love one another. Through one-to-one caring relationships, those who are hurting receive the love and care they need to support them during a life challenge. Is life more than you can handle alone right now? Are you adjusting to a new job, a change in marital status, a serious illness, the death of a loved one, or a recent move? Would you like to have someone in your life who really cares?

Everyone goes through difficult times. Having someone to care, to listen, to share God’s love with you can help you get through the confusion, stress or loneliness you may be experiencing. Let a Stephen Minister reach out to you.  Please contact our church office at 988-4141.

Children’s ministry

Free Family Fun Night, Sept. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall

Kids were given FREE FAMILY MOVIE TICKETS on Sunday and Wednesday for their family and another one to invite a friend. Our preschool families were also invited this week, too. We will watch the Disney/Pixar film "A Bug's Life" and get to take home a bug bag full of creepy, crawly, cool things. There is no admission cost for this event, and we will have free popcorn and lemonade. We will have a concession stand with a $2 Kids Pak that will include a hot dog, chips, drink and a treat. Families will also be able to purchase nachos, hot dogs, sodas, candy, water bottles, etc., from our concession stand for a small donation. All proceeds from this night will go to help the children that we support through our United Methodist - Nothing but Nets ministry. Go to www.imaginenomalaria.org for more information.

Adult volunteers needed for Children's Choir and Worship Arts Teams on Wednesday Nights

We are excited to launch a kids worship arts program on Wednesday nights. Beginning Sept. 5, we will be forming a children's drama and music team and would love to have some help with this ministry. The time commitment is just 1.5 - 2 hours per week. Can you play the piano? Do you love to teach dance? Maybe you're a great photographer or love teaching others how to paint. You might simply just love to teach children what it means to use the talents He gave each of us. If so, then we need you. We will also be learning and rehearsing for a special Christmas musical and will need a few adult actors and backstage helpers. Please e-mail Missy at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or fill out a Connection Card in the pew and mark it "WOW kids ministry."

Time to update our records in Promiseland and looking for a Volunteer to help with this process

Beginning in September, we will ask each child's parent/guardian to update their Promiseland information card. On the card, we will have child and family specific information, along with an activity and media release. A card will be filled out for each child and kept on file in the children's ministry office in case of emergency. From time to time, we will have off-site activities or even special events that may require an additional permission slip, and it may or may not need to be notarized. We are using this time at the beginning of the school year to keep our records current and to maintain the safest of environments for your family.  We would love at the end of this month for a volunteer to take copies of these forms and create a Children's Ministry Department spreadsheet.  We would also like to create Class Rosters for Sunday and Wednesday programs.  If you have a gift of administration and would like to serve our Children's Ministry in this role, please contact Missy Watson for more information.

United Methodist Women at TTUMC

United Methodist Women Logo

What do we do?

United Methodist Women members throughout the world are involved in everything from their local food pantry, to seeking just policies from state and local governments, to mobilizing millions of dollars every year to support programs that help women, children and youth around the world. Their prayers for the work of mission, guided by the Prayer Calendar and their own studies, are critically important to this work.

United Methodist Women members learn about this work in local units, districts and conferences, as well as at the Schools of Christian Mission, Spiritual Growth Retreats and other gatherings.

Temple Terrace United Methodist Women invite you to their next general meeting on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. The theme is “A Day of Prayer and Self-Denial.” Please contact Elsie Olsen,972-2844 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), or Lois Ball, 988-0642 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), for details or to answer questions.

United Methodist Men update

Calling All Men

With our cummer break winding down, guys be sure to mark your calendar for our next UMM meeting. We will be meeting on Monday, Sept. 13, at 6p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. As we kick off our fall activities, we hope to see not only our regular members, but also some of you men who haven’t attended. We hope you will consider joining us. See you there.

What is the Walk to Emmaus?

It is a spiritual-renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. It is an opportunity to meet Jesus in a new way as God's grace and love is revealed to you through other believers.

Have you ever wanted to go? Do you feel God calling you to go?

Men's walk is Sept. 30 - Oct. 3. Women's walk is Oct. 7 - 10

Sunday, Sept. 12, will be "Emmaus Sunday" at TTUMC. We will be speaking at both services and will have a table set up in Coffee Connection after both services with people who have been on the walk available to answer any questions. There are, however, only a limited number of spaces for the Walk, so we need to register quickly. If you have questions or have an interest in going, then please pray about it and then indicate your interest on a connection card in back of the pews or speak with Marge Ellison or Don Haas.

Thank you from the Salingers

Greetings in the name of Jesus,
On Aug. 19, 2010, I met with the SC District Committee of Ordained Ministry (SCDCOM) who voted to Certify I as Candidate for Ordained Ministry.
My family and I want to take this time to thank this church family for your undergirding, love and support you have extended to us – THANK YOU! Please know that you have played a tremendous part in this glorious journey and I say this from the depths of my heart I could not have ‘kept up’ without you and the Pastor’s love and support.
In preparation for the interview to SCDOM I had to submit a written response to several statements in The Book of Discipline including my thoughts on the role of the Church and my support system – you were the star! It was with great honor and pride I wrote the following excerpt from my very long response. I hope you will get a sense of my gratitude and thanks to you all. God sent me and my family to you and I thank Him. We love you and you can’t do anything about it!
For His Service,
Peter, Debbie, Elissa, Vanessa and Felicia Salinger

The Role of the Church

…God calls us to be ministers but it is the church who ordains us. As such, my call is not only between God and myself but it also involves the church and; my call was indeed confirmed by the church.   God prompted His people to see my gifts and graces and they have individually and as a group affirmed my call. I have received encouragement from the members of the small group I facilitated, the participants in the bible study classes I teach, encounters with God during one-on-one ministering/counseling and leadership roles within the church(es). If I had any doubt about my call, on May 16, 2010 at our church Charge Conference, held for the purpose of voting for my continuance for candidacy, I had the honor to witness the testimonies of God’s gift and graces the church has experienced through me. It brought a new level of joy into my heart and much glory to God. Ministers work with the “body of Christ” on earth, and the fact that the church confirmed my candidacy adds more clarity of Gods divine call to Ordained Ministry.

…The church, the other constant and ever-present part of my life, has always been a place of love for me; the place where I witness God’s grace working in and among His people. I have seen Love in the church, met Truth in the church, established Friends in the church, felt Safety in the church and much more. A year ago the Spirit led me to Temple Terrace UMC after being at St. James UMC for eight years. This was one of the hardest moves I had to make because of the love and support that the St. James “family” had showered on me and my family. God told me my work for Him was done there and it was time to move to another ‘family’. The love, embrace and undergirding my family and I received from Temple Terrace UMC from the first day is within our hearts.   Pastor Moore has addressed the church explaining the blessedness the church will be experiencing as they undergird, support and love one (a family) being called to Ordained Ministry. This support, coupled with receipts of cards, notes and constant prayers, has touched our hearts the most, confirming that we have yet again expanded our support system and have gained another family.

I ended the response with these words, and I now promise them to you:

…As Thomas Oden so eloquently wrote, “The Christian life is a daily dying to sin and living to righteousness that constitutes the life of repentance and faith, continually reaffirmed and renewed”[1], I do vow to live such a Christian life through God’s grace, the undergirding support of my beloved family and the church.
“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.” (Phil 1:23)
